Study: children trying drugs earlier

Across Pennsylvania, and more locally in Carbon County, children are beginning to try drugs at an earlier age. Here are some alarming statistics.

• In 2011-2012, 523 Carbon County students have tried marijuana, 122 have tried cocaine, 90 tried heroin, 140 tried Vicodin, 132 tried Percocet, 126 have tried OxyContin, 148 have tried Xanax and 87 tried Valium.• In 2012-2013, 84 sixth grade students have tried some type of drugs. The numbers continue that 127 seventh or eighth graders tried drugs; 139 ninth through 11th graders have tried and 2,316 of the Carbon County students surveyed don't use drugs.• 279 students reported that they get their drugs from friends; 41 get it from their parents, 59 get it from siblings, 49 get it from other family members, 77 get it from strangers and 72 get it from businesses.• Most students explained that reasons they use some type of drug include being cool, peer pressure, like the taste, stress or boredom.• 121 students reported that their parents know they are using drugs.Information compiled from the 2012-2013 Carbon County Schools Drug and Alcohol Survey.
