Facts about drug epidemic

• Pennsylvania ranks ninth in the nation with 15 drug overdose deaths for every 100,000 people.

• Carbon County ranks fifth in the state in overdose deaths statewide.• Commonly abused medications include barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and sleep medications such as Valium, Xanax, Lunesta and Ambien.• Prescription opiate overdose deaths quadrupled between 1999 and 2007.• Distribution of prescription opiate drugs has increased more than 600 percent between 1977 and 2007.• More than 38,000 deaths per year are related to heroin overdoses. About 75 percent are opiate related.• 22 people in Pittsburgh died in 2014 because of fentanyl-laced heroin.• For every one overdose death, 10 people are admitted to treatment for drug abuse.• An estimated 50 percent of opiate drugs are diverted for sale or addiction purposes.
