During a meeting Thursday, supervisors said Commonwealth Connections Academy hopes be open for business by Jan. 2015. The company has purchased and plans to renovate the former J.E. Morgan Antique Car Museum on the corner of Route 443 and Cold Spring Road. The township's Planning Commission will review the Land Development Plan for Commonwealth Connections Academy during its meeting Jan. 28. The company has already placed advertisements seeking bids on the construction work required to remodel the building."They would like to occupy the building by the end of the year and start Jan. 1," said Chairman Jim Akins. "I think they're going to be a great asset to the community."Commonwealth is headquartered in Harrisburg and has numerous locations in the state. The West Penn location will be occupied by staff, and only occasionally by students, who may come to the academy one or two times a year to take tests. The township required Commonwealth to present a Land Development Plan because the parking lot will be expanded. A land development plan is required whenever an impervious surface is expanded. The supervisors have obtained estimates on the cost of getting physicals and Hepatitus B shots for its volunteer firefighters. The health precautions are recommended, but not required, by the township's insurance carrier for Workers Compensation.According to the estimate, the cost for each physical would be $300. The Hepatitus B shot is given as a series of three shots, and each shot would cost $160. West Penn Township has about 50 volunteer firefighters."We didn't budget for that," Akins said. Since the physicals and Hepatitus B shots are not required, the supervisors decided not to take action on the recommendation.Police Chief Brian Johnson said that the township's road department employees have begun making repairs as needed to the police vehicles. Johnson said that having the work done "in house" is saving money for the township.
