David Osterhout, member of 1956 Palmerton state finalists, succumbs

David Osterhout, who was the starting point guard on the Palmerton High School basketball team when it reached the 1956 PIAA Class A State championship, passed away in Washington, DC, on Thursday, January 23. He was 74.

Osterhout was a member of the Blue Bomber basketball program all four years and was labeled a terrific actor in his high school yearbook.The 1956 team had a great season which included an incredible 58-57 victory over Allentown High in the District 11 final.The Bombers had a seven point lead, lost it, but roared back for the win as Bob Mlkvy scored 29 points and Terry Eckert 17. It was Allentown's first loss after 25 straight wins.After the district championship, the Bombers went on to defeat Swoyersville and Radnor to earn the right to meet Farrell for the state title. The game, played at the Penn Palestra, saw Farrell win 57-45.Palmerton went on a 19-game win streak and ended the season with a 24-5 mark.David furthered his education at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1961 and later attaining his law degree from the University of Minnesota.While working on Capitol Hill for Congressman Dan Flood, he met his future wife, Susan, on a double blind date. They married had two children, Jacob and Jeannette, whom he loved dearly.David will forever be remembered as a great cook, a voracious reader, a modern art lover, a student of the game of basketball, and a passionate storyteller.He is survived by his wife, Susan Tannenbaum, their two children, Jacob and Jeannette, and their spouses, Dr. Vanessa Ng and Santiago Martinez Govela. David was the brother-in-law of Jeanne Tannenbaum, Sigmund and Ellen Tannenbaum, Nancy Tannenbaum, and John Becton.A graveside service was held on January 26 at the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery, Greensboro, NC.
