Lady 'Dawgs outlast Catty
Through the first 28 minutes of Tuesday's basketball game between Northern Lehigh and Catasauqua, the Lady Bulldogs definitely had their struggles. However, despite their troubles, they were still in the hunt.
Senior Kelsey Follweiler, who got herself in foul trouble, returned to the game to hit a three-pointer with 3:56 left to turn the tide and ignite her teammates as Northern Lehigh dumped Catasauqua 35-24 in Colonial League action.Struggling to come back most of the game, the Lady Bulldogs fell behind 17-9 in the third quarter. Half way through the quarter they were dealt another setback when Follweiler committed her fourth foul of the game sending her to the bench."I told them 'don't quit'," head coach Tony Thomas said. "That is one thing about this team. No matter what the scoreboard said, no matter who we played, the girls never quit."Three baskets by Emily Bevans (10 points) who fought against Catty's height advantage all night helped cut the score to 21-18 early in the fourth quarter. Catasauqua then got the lead back up to six prompting a timeout."I told them we need to chip away at the lead and do what you have to do," Thomas told the team. "'Once we get the lead we are going to keep it' and that's what they did."After Olewine hit one-of-two from the line, Follweiler was reinserted and did not waste any time. She drilled a three-pointer to cut the lead to 24-22, which sprung Northern Lehigh out of its doldrums."I was thinking that I just wanted to get in there and I think it showed. In the first ten seconds, I hit a three," Follweiler said. "The girls said it was a game changer for them. It picked our spirits up and gave us confidence we needed to win."The Lady Bulldogs ripped off the final 17 points of the game to win going away."She is a leader on the floor and a leader in the locker room," Thomas said of Follweiler. "With four fouls against her she showed that."Olewine, who showed steady leadership while the senior guard was sitting, stole a pass for an easy layup and hit four more free throws in the waning minutes finished with a game high 13 points."The free throws down the stretch were very kind to us," Thomas said of his team hitting 8-of-10 down the stretch. "The free throw line in the beginning of the game was not so kind."Northern Lehigh could not buy a basket early on, while turnover issues also aided in their early struggles. Thosw two things combined helped them They fell behind 7-1 at the end of the first quarterThen the Lady Bulldogs rebounded with a 7-0 run to take the lead, but then hit another cold streak, falling behind 15-8 at half."We came out a little slow and coach told us to just play our game, and that is what we did." said Follweiler, who finished with 8 points."We were able to do what we wanted to do all year long and that is go out, play basketball and have fun with it."This really means a lot because the paper said we were going to be last in the league and this proves we are not. With everything that went against us this season we could have hung our heads, but we didn't and that says a lot about our character."CATASAUQUASobrinksi 0-0-0-0, Moten 2-0-0-4, Buczynski 3-0-0-6, Bachman 2-1-3-6, Safadi 0-0-0-0, Sell 0-0-0-0, Saruba 0-0-0-0, Matos 1-0-1-2, Garner 0-0-0-0, Sziy 3-0-0-6; Totals: 11-1-4-24NORTHERN LEHIGHFollweiler 2-3-6-8, Gallimore 0-0-0-0, Mujovic 0-0-0-0, Kemery 0-0-0-0, Olewine 3-6-10-13, Tarafas 1-0-0- 2, Bevans 4-2-4-10, Knerr 0-0-0-0, Harlan 0-2-4-2, Thomas 0-0-0-0; Totals 10-13-24-35Catasauqua 7 8 4 5 - 24Northern Lehigh 1 7 8 19 - 35Three-pointers: C - Bachman 1; NL - Olewine 1 Follweiler 1.
