Tamaqua swimmers race past Moravian

The Tamaqua Blue Raiders were officially Schuylkill League swim champions heading into their meet against Moravian Academy.

The boys and girls squads both stayed hot on senior night, as they were victorious 95-86 and 105-74 respectively."We had a ton of kids that were sick today," said Tamaqua head swimming coach Ashley Stanek."It's extremely difficult to swim when you're sick. They all pushed through it, swam well, and I sure am proud of them."Stanek was impressed with Danielle DeCindio's effort. DeCindio was one Raider who was ill and managed to have a big impact in the meet. Not only was DeCindio part of three separate relay teams which were victorious, she also placed third in the 100 Yard Fly.Tamaqua is a unique squad of swimmers who consistantly get major contributions from upper and underclassmen.Rebecca Minehan, Carly Trovinger, Makayla Boyle, and Jake Kropp were just a few of the senior Raiders who claimed invidivual wins against Moravian.Stanek said, "Our senior class of ten has such great leadership that the underclassmen seemed to feed off of it throughout the season."As the season went on, our kids learned to understand that every swimmer counts even when you don't come in first or second place."On the other hand, Rebecca Kanaskie continued to be a very impressive Raider freshman swimmer. Kanaskie beat out Moravian's Devon Korhammer with a time of 2:24.21 to win the 200 Yard I.M.Kanaskie is not the only freshman to capture the attention of Stanek and her staff."A ton of our kids made huge strides this year," said the Tamaqua coach."Abby Brickler, Bryan Ramirez, and Ryan Alicandri are just a few of our freshman who really improved across the board this season. We are a successful group because our younger swimmers focus, listen, and are determined to put in the work in order to improve every day."As expected, fellow Raiders Joann Butkus and Matt Stanek swam well as they each earned two invidividual wins in the contest. The rest of the Tamaqua individuals who earned victories were Patrick McMullen, Thorn Devlin and Ben Turrano.Next Saturday Tamaqua will host the Schuylkill All-League swim meet."Our ultimate goal is always districts at the end of the season," said the Raider coach. Tonight we tried to improve on our times in preparation for when we get there The kids definitely had good competition tonight against Moravian.""Everyone on our team works hard and has a great work ethic. Next weekend will be a perfect opportunity to swim against the best local competition and stay in rythym for districts."BoysTamaqua 95, Moravian 86@Agate.Body:200 Medley Relay- 1.
