Slatington woman admitsstealing from Kmart

A Slatington woman was sentenced to four years of probation after she admitted to stealing more than $800 of Kmart merchandise by returning items she had never purchased.

Lehigh Township Police said Ashley Brooke Caley, 32, would go to the Walnutport Kmart and place an item in her shopping cart and then proceed to the customer services desk and say she wanted to return an item she had purchased. Because she did not have a receipt, store officials would only give her store credit.Store officials began to catch on after Caley, of the 100 block of Main Street, attempted to return a Keurig coffee maker valued at more than $300 on June 30, 2013. Told she had hit her limit on returns she could make herself, she walked out of the store with the Keurig, police said. She later returned to the store with the Keurig and Eric Messick, of Walnutport, who exchanged it for her.Security officials discovered no one had purchased a Keurig in weeks and reviewed security footage exposing her theft, police said. Other footage showed her taking a patio heater off the shelf and returning it for $269.99 in store credit on June 8, police said. On June 10, she and Messick exchanged a tent they never purchased for $211.99 in store credit, according to court documents.Caley pleaded guilty to one count of theft by deception before Northampton County Senior Judge Leonard Zito. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop nine other theft charges against her. She was ordered to pay a restitution of $816.16Messick, who is charged with receiving stolen property, conspiracy to commit theft and three counts of theft, is scheduled for trial Feb. 3.
