Nesquehoning police investigate recent crashes

Nesquehoning Chief Sean Smith investigated an accident at 4:31 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, on Route 93, where a driver had struck a rock embankment. The man, who police did not identify, was sitting on top of the guard rail. Smith spoke to the driver, who indicated that he lost control of his car because of icy road conditions. Smith verified the driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. He discovered that the driver had no insurance on his car. The car was towed. No one was injured.

Patrolmen Dane O'Brien and Steven Homanko were dispatched to Route 54 at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 15 in the area of the Valero gas station for a report of a car crash with unknown injuries. Through the officers' investigation, they learned that a car had crossed Route 54 from the Valero gas station parking lot and hit a car going westbound. Both cars received moderate damage.Patrolman O'Brien also was called to Redner's Warehouse parking lot at 5:43 p.m. Jan. 17 for a crash. Police learned that a car had struck a park car while backing out of a parking space. There was minor damage to both cars.Officer Breiner was called to Route 209 at 6:02 a.m. Jan. 18, for a car crash. Police found that a telephone pole was sheared off and a power line ws laying across the roadway. Breiner noted that the driver seemed to be under the influence. The driver did refuse testing and charges are pending against the driver.Officer Timothy Wuttke was called to Route 54 in the area of Ametek for a crash. Upon arrival, Wuttke found two cars were disabled and both drivers were moderately injured. One of the drivers had lost control of his car on the snow covered road and caused the crash. Both drivers were evaluated by EMS personnel and both vehicles were towed from the scene.Patrolman Homanko was called to the intersection of Stock and Tonelli roads at 12:50 p.m. Jan. 21 for a one car crash. Through investigation, police learned that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Route 54 when he lost control of the vehicle, striking a telephone pole. The car had minor damage.Police were also called to Kovatch Mobile Equipment parking lot at 9:13 a.m. Jan. 22 for a vehicle fire. Nesquehoning fire and EMS also responded with Jim Thorpe fire department. No one was injured.Police were notified by Carbon County Correctional facility for an inmate who has an outstanding warrant out of the Ohio for theft by deception. Joseph Ashley was arraigned before the District Judge Casimir Kosciolek. Bail was set at $50,000 straight.
