Water main breaks Town without water for nearly two hours

Summit Hill residents were without water for nearly two hours yesterday afternoon as a result of a major water main break.

The break happened in the unit block of East Ludlow Street.Water authority foreman Robert Mongi said the break had actually occurred two days earlier but was only located yesterday. The water supply to the town was deliberately shut off while workers made repairs to the six-inch line. Some fire hydrants also were opened during the repairs. The break was about seven feet under the street.During the situation, area fire departments were placed on stand-by status to respond with tank trucks had a structure or dwelling fire occurred in the borough.Despite the biting cold weather, water authority employees worked diligently to get the repairs made as quickly as possible, expressing concern about some home heating units needing water to operate.Water was turned off by the Water Department personnel at about 2 p.m. By 4 o'clock, service was restored. The cause of the break wasn't known.A backhoe from Stoney Lonesome Excavators was used to assist Water Department employees, who responded with a front-end loader and various other equipment.
