Icy Interstate 81 cause of crashes
An icy Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County on Wednesday, Jan. 15, was the cause of several crashes investigated by state police at Frackville.
Troopers said the first crash was reported about 7:33 a.m. in Kline Township. Dana Boyer, 29, McAdoo, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu on the on-ramp from Route 309 when he lost control due to the icy road. The car struck a concrete barrier in the medium where it came to rest. Boyer sustained a minor injury but did not require immediate medical attention. The car had to be towed from the scene.Boyer was cited for driving a vehicle at an (un) safe speed.Three crashes occurred in New Castle Township. At 7:55 a.m. Samuel C. Anyanwu, 49, of Harrisburg, was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry northbound and attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle when he lost control due to icy conditions. The car went onto the east berm and struck an embankment. Anyanwu was not injured.Amy L. Fabian, 49, of Coal Township, Northumberland County, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker northbound about 7:56 a.m. when she lost control due to icy conditions. The Tracker went onto the west berm and struck a rock embankment. Fabian was not injured.At 8:29 a.m. Christopher J. Finkernagel, 25, of Pocono Lake, Monroe County, was driving a 2003 Buick Rendezvous northbound and lost control due to icy conditions. The vehicle struck a rock embankment along the west berm. Finkernagel sustained minor facial injuries and was treated at the scene by Frackville ambulance personnel.At 8:08 a.m. Joshua A. Naftzinger, 28, of Pottsville, was driving a 2009 Pontiac G6 southbound in Mahanoy Township, when he lost control due to icy conditions. The car went onto the west berm where it struck guide rail.Naftzinger and his passenger, Iona Lucan, 29, of Mahanoy City, were not injured. The car had to be towed from the scene.Naftzinger was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.
