Tamaqua school calendar will be adjusted to reflect makeup days in district

Jack Frost may be nipping at your nose, and he's also starting to nip away at Easter vacation.

During a Tamaqua School Board committees' meeting Tuesday, directors learned that the school calendar must be adjusted."We have to revise once again," said Superintendent Carol Makuta. "We're into Easter recess to get a snow make-up day."Students will make up the missed days by attending school on Jan. 20, Feb. 17 (President's Day) and April 23.Directors recognized the December Elementary School's Students of the Month: Tamaqua Elementary fifth graders Carson Krell and Natalie Hydro; Rush Elementary School first grader Amanda Chen; West Penn Elementary first grader David Hicks; and West Penn Elementary kindergarten student Isabella Grasso. Each student was introduced by his or her teacher, who described the student's work and character traits."I'm so glad administrators came up with this (recognizing the students at the elementary level)," said board President Larry Wittig, addressing the students' parents."The skills your children were recognized for tonight hard work, good attitude will transcend their academic skills."Other actions approved in committee, which directors will vote on during next week's meeting are:• A day trip Saturday, May 17 to New York City for the Blue Raider Marching Band, paid for by the students and supplemented by funds from the band boosters.• A five-day trip to Hilton Head, S.C., for the Blue Raider varsity baseball team, funded by the baseball boosters.• A new van run to take four students to the South Vo-Tech School on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at a cost of $145 per day.
