State police at the Lehighton barracks said a flagger was struck by a vehicle in a tree trimming work zone on Interchange Road (Route 209) in Towamensing Township at 9:54 a.m. Dec. 13.
Police said James J. McAlister, 45, of Spencer, W. Va., was transported to Palmerton Hospital by the Palmerton EMS after the incident. Police said he sustained moderate injuries.Police said a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Patricia M. McGee, 34, of Auburn, was traveling north on Route 209 at the time when the operator failed to observe signs indicating a work zone was ahead. Police said she applied her brakes and swerved to the right to avoid a collision with the vehicle ahead of her, that was stopped.The Mountaineer traveled onto the shoulder of the road, which was snow and ice covered, at which time the operator lost control of the vehicle. It rotated counter-clockwise, struck a mailbox belonging to 9560 Interchange Road and struck the flagger with its right rear quarter panel. Police said the pedestrian came to rest about 5-8 feet from where he was hit.Police said McGee will be charges for Vehicle Code violations.
