Winter walk

Schuylkill On the Move (SOM), a project promoting positive steps towards good health through walking, will host a Winter Walk on Feb. 16 along the local Lehigh Valley and New England Rail Trail in South Tamaqua. The walk will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and will begin at Stonehedge Gardens, located on Dairy Road near the intersection of Route 309 and Route 443.

The four-mile ramble is considered to be an easy walk, but participants should wear appropriate footwear and dress for the winter weather.

Zion Lewistown

The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Canned goods will be collected in connection with Souper Bowl Sunday. All goods will be donated to the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

The Guild will meet in the social hall at 7 p.m. on Feb. 6.

Soup social

Monthly soup socials are being held at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St. The next outreach social will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Feb. 1. The event is part of Trinity's monthly "Feeding the Hungry" program.

The public is welcome to attend and share in the free soup, friendship and God's love. Those attending are reminded to use the lower parking lot entrance into Founder's Hall.

Safety program

Volunteers are needed for the proposed Green Dot Program (see Dec. 27, 2013 TIMES NEWS), which is designed to provide people from all walks of life with the skills needed to combat violence. Training provided by the Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center of Schuylkill and Lebanon Counties will focus on a bystander intervention program, offering awareness, education and skills-practice.

An intensive four-day training session is scheduled to begin March 17 at the Morgan Campus of Lehigh Carbon Community College in Tamaqua. The first day will include an overview.

Scholarship offer

Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society is offering a $500 educational scholarship to one qualified woman in Schuylkill County. Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: must be female with a primary residence in Schuylkill County; currently enrolled in college with a major in education; and must have competed at least one year of college with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Zion's Stone Church

The Rev. Michael Frost will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion's Stone Church in West Penn Township. Sunday school classes are held at 10:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the youth group will be participating in the 2014 Souper Bowl of Caring, collecting cash and canned good donations for the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

A Bible study session is held from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Thursday.

Calvary Evangelical

The Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a "big game" party with devotions will begin at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 570-668-9111.

An hour of praise and prayer will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
