Monroe driver facing charges

A Monroe County driver is facing charges for allegedly giving a false accident report to police.

Nesquehoning police identified the driver as Yesenia Delapaz, 35, of 29 Old Timber Rd., in Mount Pocono. She has been charged with fraud document-insurance rate determined; false/fraud/incomplete insurance claim, false swearing, unsworn falsification to authorities, false alarms to agency of public safety, false reports (two counts), false statement, and tampering with evidence. On Oct. 7 Chief Sean Smith was dispatched to the Fuel Up service station on E. Catawissa St. for a reported hit and run accident. On scene Smith found Delapaz seated in a 2014 Lexus SUV crying and very upset. She claimed that as she pulled into the gas station another vehicle exiting struck hers and the driver fled the scene. She could not give a description of the other vehicle or driver.Smith inspected the damage and again asked Delapaz about the circumstances of the accident, because the damage did not match up, in Smith's opinion, to what was being said by Delapaz. He also asked Delapaz where she worked, and was told at the Kovatch Corporation. He again asked her to repeat how the accident occurred, and this time she said she had already pulled into one of the gas pumps when the other vehicle struck her vehicle.Through the course of the investigation Smith went to the Kovatch building where Delapaz worked and found items incident to an accident, including pieces of a taillight and red brick on the building. These items matched what he found on the Lexus. He also reviewed surveillance video at the gas station that showed Delapaz pulling into the pumps but no other vehicles in the area.He questioned Delapaz a second time and she continued to claim she was involved in a hit-and-run accident at the gas station. Smith also received a message from Delapaz's insurance company that she had made a claim for damages and was based on a hit-and-run accident. As a result of the Smith's investigation the charges were filed against Delapaz.
