Northern Lehigh School makes breakfast a priority

Northern Lehigh School District has composed a new strategy designed to get more of its elementary students to eat breakfast.

Assistant Superintendent Karen Nicholas noted that while 47 percent of the district's elementary students are on free and reduced lunch, only 3 percent of them are taking part in the district's breakfast program.As a result, Nicholas noted that fliers were sent home to all families during the recent parent/teacher conferences."We need to put it out there how important it is for our elementary students to be eating breakfast in order to be able to learn what's necessary while at school," Nicholas said. "That's why we're trying something new."In other business, the board:• Granted permission to Rhonda Frantz to attend the 59th Annual PASBO Conference, March 12-14, 2014, at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, with a registration cost of $284, lodging, $155, and meals, $64, for a total approximate cost of $503, to be paid from the Business Office Budget.• Granted permission to Sherri Molitoris to attend the 59th Annual PASBO Conference, March 12-14, 2014, at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, with a registration cost $284, lodging, $155, travel, $108, and meals, $64, for a total approximate cost of $611, to be paid from the Business Office Budget.• Approved teacher Elizabeth Case as a Helping Teacher for Kayla Perkowski in the Northern Lehigh School District Induction Program for the 2013-14 school year, at a stipend of $750.• Approved to appoint the law firm of Steckel & Stopp as solicitors for the Northern Lehigh School District for 2014. The hourly rate will be $122 per hour for general services, and $142 per hour for litigation-related services. The hourly rate for staff will be $94 per hour. In addition, the board further approved the adjustment of the retainer fee for the 2013-14 school year from $2,000 to $1,000.• Approved changes to the Northern Lehigh School District Emergency Operations Plan.
