Throughout his golf career at Northwestern Lehigh High School, Cole Miller has proven to be one of the top golfers in the state.

Now, a little more than a month after his second-consecutive second-place finish in the PIAA Class AA Golf Championships, the Tiger senior is set to take his playing career to the next level.

On Monday at Northwestern Lehigh High School, Miller - accompanied by his parents Carl and Jenny Miller, as well as Tiger head coach Tim Miller - signed his official Letter of Intent to attend Pennsylvania State University where he'll continue his golf career.

"For me, I chose Penn State because it offered exactly what I was looking for," Miller said. "It had the academics, which was in my mind was second, but in my parents' minds it was the biggest thing. They wanted a school that I could do well in.

"And then the golf program was the other aspect. I wanted a solid golf program, and that's what they have up there. They're around middle of the pack right now, but hopefully we can improve and in the future be competitive in the NCAA tournaments.

Miller, who chose Penn State over a number of other respectable schools, including Rutgers University, East Carolina University, and Kent State University, was inpressed by the school's atmosphere.

It was his two visits, an official visit in mid-November and an unofficial one over the summer, that had a lasting impact on Miller.

"I would say the atmosphere when I went up there seemed so involved, and it seemed like a great place to be able to spend four years of your life," Miller said.

While he has certainly made his mark on various golf courses, Miller has also been among the top students in his class academically. He currently holds a 95 average and ranks 35th in his class.

Miller plans on majoring in Business Marketing at Penn State, with a minor in Finance also a possibility.

Under head coach Greg Nye (who is entering his 22nd season at Penn State) and assistant coach Mark Leon, Miller is looking forward to the opportunity that lies ahead at Penn State.

"He [Leon] has actually played on the Canadian Tour, so he has connections through the golf world with that," Miller said. "It was a really nice aspect to see how he knows the whole golf system. I know I'm in good hands going up there with him.

"And the head coach, Greg Nye, has played at the college level, and has been coaching for over 30 years I believe."

With the success he has enjoyed over his career - three Colonial League titles, two District 11 Class AA championships, two second-place finishes at the PIAA Class AA Championships, and various player of the year awards, Miller has already been accustomed to playing against the best talent the state has to offer. That will only give him an advantage as he enters his first season with the Nittany Lions in the 2014-15 campaign.

"I think my experiences with high school golf, and the competitiveness in our area, will make my transition toward college golf that much easier because I've experienced all the competition levels that are out there," Miller said. "These are all guys who can shoot under par, and can play extremely good golf."
