• During the time between the close of bear season in 2011 and the opening of archery season in 2012, the Pennsylvania Game Commission captured 731 bears. Forty-four percent were captured in response to nuisance complaints.

• Bears are harvested in 56 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. The top five counties in 2012 were Lycoming (341), Clinton (265), Tioga (227), Potter (179) and Centre (143). Hunters bagged 55 in Carbon County and 32 in Schuylkill County.• In 2012, the three biggest bruins taken in Carbon County weighed 445, 389 and 385 pounds. In Schuylkill, the three biggest bears tipped the scales at 384, 274 and 242 pounds.• During 2012, 636 bear mortalities occurred outside of hunting season, including 408 automotive collisions, nine illegal shootings, 34 property or agricultural damage removals and 115 "miscellaneous causes" of death.• The leading "miscellaneous cause" of death for the black bears is mange. In 2011 and 2012, about two-thirds of the bear deaths in the miscellaneous category were attributed to mange, with visible symptoms of hair loss.
