Tamaqua woman facing charges

A Tamaqua woman will be charged as a result of a shoplifting incident on Nov. 16 at the Family Dollar Store on Railroad Street.

Police were dispatched to the retail store at 5:54 p.m. and spoke with a cashier. The employee had empty packages and pointed out a customer who she believed had removed the items from their packaging. The empty boxes were for a vial of fragrance oil, a cologne and a mascara.The customer, identified as Cory Matalavage, 32, of 33 W. Rowe St., just happened to have the corresponding products in her pockets. The total value of the items was listed as $4.51.Matalavage was apprehended and a pat down search turned up four and one-half peach-colored pills in her left jacket pocket. She told the officer they were Xanax and that she did have a prescription for them, despite not have the prescription container.In her purse, officers found a Social Security card, ATM card, insurance and identification cards that are the property of Bruce Matalavage.When contacted, Bruce Matalavage told the officer Cory did not have permission to have his cards. He added that he thought he had lost them and placed an advertisement in the newspaper last week offering a reward for their return.Matalavage faces charges of retail theft and possession of a controlled substance.
