Do I need to enroll in the insurance marketplace?

As Americans are scrambling to meet all the requirements of the upcoming Affordable Care Act, questions have surfaced about whether the new Health Insurance Marketplace is affecting seniors.

According to Kaiser Health News, Medicare beneficiaries do not need to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace that will be implemented in 2014 because Medicare is not part of the health insurance exchanges. Some changes to Medicare that will be coming from the Affordable Care Act over the next decade include additional preventive care services being covered; closing the "doughnut hole" in the prescription drug coverage; lowering reimbursements to nursing homes, hospitals, home health agencies and other providers; and extending the Medicare Trust Fund until at least 2029.Premium changes are also going to be occurring for Medicare Part D, Kaiser Health News reports.Under the new law, beneficiaries making more than $85,000 annually or $170,000 as a couple, will be charged more for Part D premiums, similarly to the already sliding scale of Medicare Part B.
