The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Nov. 6 at Two Kings Pizzeria in Hometown. Nancy Meiser served as hostess, treating members to antipasti and pizza. Meiser presented a program on the history of Veterans Day.Cookies were collected to be shipped to Commander Brian Hummel and his troops in Kuwait. His mother, Sue Hummel, was congratulated on becoming a grandmother, as the commander welcomed a son to his family.The chapter will be participating in the Tamaqua Spirit of Christmas Festival's Christmas Tree contest. The chapter will decorate a tree, which will be donated to a local family after the contest ends.Donna Gerber will be honored with the Order of the Rose, marking 15 years of membership, on Nov. 20. The event will be held at Chantilly's Restaurant in Barnesville. Members were reminded to wear one of the colors of the Beta Sigma Phi Order of the Rose to the ceremony.The next chapter social will be held at Schick's Cafe in December. The event will be open to members, friends and spouses. Details are yet to be finalized.Diabetes supportSt. Luke's University Health Network is sponsoring a Diabetes Support Group. Monthly meetings are held in the Miner's Cafe at the health network's Miners Hospital Campus in Coaldale.Each month, a different diabetes relevant topic is explored. Topics are based on ways to improve blood sugar control and quality of life. Meetings are generally 45 minutes long and include a question and answer period.This month's meeting will be held on Nov. 19. Reservations are not required. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, a hymn sing will be held at 6:30 p.m.An hour of prayer and praise is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.The annual Thanksgiving and Harvest Home service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 24 with music, skits, old fashioned attire, fun and fellowship. National Bible Week will also be celebrated. The public is welcome to attend.The annual Thanksgiving morning service will be held at 8 a.m. and will feature the Rev. Kenneth Melber of Friedens Lutheran Church.
