Weatherly family is homeless following fast moving fire

A Weatherly family is homeless following a fast moving fire which damaged a home at 887 Railroad Drive. The fire started in the kitchen area of the home at about 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Because of the remote area, the fire destroyed most of the two-story log cabin home. The home was built and owned by Marty and Lori Cichowic.Weatherly Fire Chief Dan Weston was in charge of the fire scene."The call came in as a kitchen fire," said Weston. "When I got here, the house was fully involved.Weston said that the fire quickly engulfed the kitchen, living room and area about the kitchen and was burning the roof by the time firefighters arrived. He said the one section of the home may be salvaged as it only had smoke and water damage.Weston said there was one burn victim, but he had no knowledge of the identity of the victim.Cichowic confirmed there was a burn victim, but declined to identify him. He said he saw him and he was doing OK.Firefighters spent more than two hours putting out the stubborn flames, which kept reappearing in the roof of the wooden structure.Cichowic was at the scene watching firefighters battle the blaze."I cleared this lot myself," he said. "I built the house myself. It was a true log home."Cichowic said that he would stay with neighbors and friends."There are a lot of good people in this area," he said.Fire departments from Foster Township, Freeland, Hazle Township, Quakake, Kidder Township, McAdoo, Tresckow, Hornwood and Hazleton were at the fire scene assisting Weatherly Fire Department.Weston said that he has called in a fire marshal to investigate the cause of the fire.
