Bulldogs gamble to beat Bombers
With 4:35 left and trailing by a touchdown, Northern Lehigh put a drive together that will go down as one that will be remembered as a classic ending to the 2013 season.
Starting on their own 45, the Bulldogs used 13 plays and converted two fourth downs for first downs to keep the drive alive. The end result was Nate Farber, who went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season, bulling in from the three with 33 seconds left.Trailing by a point, the Bulldogs decided to go for two and Farber ran it in giving his team what turned out to be a 22-21 victory and the right to keep the Battle of the Blue Mountain Trophy."It was an exciting game, wasn't it?", said Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout afterwards. "Farber got cleared to play yesterday, after being injured and he had a great game."I'm just proud of our kids. We go down 14-0, Palmerton had all the momentum. That kind of was our theme. We told our kids for us being 1-8 going into it, our practices have been good all year and our kids have been excited to play and I'm happy that they ended on that note tonight."As a staff, that's our decision to go for two. Both teams played well tonight and we felt let's not drag this on. We had the momentum and Farber just kept his legs moving until he went over the orange line."The Bulldogs actually had the ball down at the Palmerton 27 on their first possession of the night, but Palmerton's Matt Semmel fell on a fumble giving the Bombers the ball. With freshman Garrett Perschy getting his first varsity start while Zach Buck watched from the sidelines after suffering an injury last week, the Bombers put together a 10-play drive that included Perschy completions to Mike Stasko and Logan Lesher, ending with a Tre Nelson 4-yard TD run. Jon Schwarz booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 4:06 left in the first quarter.Four straight first downs led to the next Palmerton score in the first minute of the second quarter before Nelson ran it in again from the one. Schwarz booted another PAT to make it 14-0.Then the Bulldogs began to answer. Quarterback Chance DeLong found Ryan Rubio open for a 10-yard strike and Jake Marunich booted his first of two PATS to cut the Bomber lead to 14-7 with 6:31 left in the half. With 1:19 remaining, Nate Farber carried the ball seven out of nine times before going in for a five-yard TD. Marunich's PAT tied it 14-14 at the half.Palmerton took the lead back on a Stasko run around the right side for an 18-yard touchdown and Schwarz kicked the PAT with 5:52 left in the third quarter and the Bombers had a 21-14 advantage. The Bombers couldn't muster much of an offense the rest of the way. They actually stopped a Bulldog drive on the PHS 28 with 6:41 left on the clock, but it was the last drive that made the difference."Nate Farber's a good player," said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. "We knew that coming in."We had the momentum and they came right back, which we knew they would do. We fought back and regained the lead and it came right down to the end. They made one more play than we did and that was the difference."Both teams started quite a few underclassmen and both had high praise for all of them.Tout mentioned the fine catch by Rubio that kept the winning touchdown drive alive. Walkowiak liked what he saw out of Perschy and Stasko and sees a bright future for both of them.So look for both teams to make some noise down the road in what could be a very interesting Colonial League next season.
