Commissioners cancel meeting to attend deputy's funeral

Thursday's Carbon County commissioners meeting has been canceled.

Commissioner Wayne Nothstein, chairman, said the reason for the cancellation is due to the funeral of Lt. David Midas, who served as a deputy in the Carbon County Sheriff's office. Midas died early Saturday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital from a gunshot wound."After some discussion I know all of us were really close with Dave," Nothstein said. "We knew not only him, we knew his wife and we certainly want to be there for the family and want to be there for the service."Nothstein said that there was nothing major on this week's agenda and the board felt all actions could be postponed until next week's meeting."This will give the employees and ourselves the opportunity to attend the service and pay our respects," he added. "Dave has been a very good friend to all of us and he was a fantastic person to work with and a caring person."Nothstein said the atmosphere in the county offices is somber since word spread of Midas' passing this past weekend."You definitely see it in all the employees, especially those in the courthouse and who knew him," he said, adding that even the employees that really didn't know Midas were affected. "It has certainlly taken a toll on the county employees because it was one of our own. He was respected by everyone. We are all in total disbelief."Midas, who served in the sheriff's office for the last seven years, will be laid to rest Thursday.Friends may pay their respects from 9 to 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 318 Plane St., Weatherly.A Mass of Christian burial will then follow at the church, followed by interment in Sky-View Memorial Park, Tamaqua.Memorials in his name may be sent to his wife Julie Midas, for an education fund for his children, at 434 E. Main St., Weatherly, PA 18255; or to the Midas Family Memorial Fund, c/o Jim Thorpe National Bank, 12 Broadway, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229.
