The Summit Hill Lions Club is continuing its American flag program this week.

The program was resurrected earlier this year as a means of honoring and/or memorializing veterans from the community.For one-week periods, the club will fly the American flag at the Ludlow Park site to remember current and former town residents who gave service to our country.As the program continues this week, the flag will fly in honor of John "Jackie" O'Gurek.He served 21 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1987 as an MSG (E-8). He was last assigned to Co. C School Brigade, U.S. Army Ordnance Missile and Munitions Center and School, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala., where he was a chief logistics non-commissioners officer.Throughout his career, he served at Ft. Jackson, S.C., Redstone Arsenal, three times, with the 65th Ordnance Detachment in the Republic of Korea and the Federal Republic of Germany, Homestead Air Force Base, Fla., Ft. Bragg, N.C., and with the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in Wuerzburg, Germany.He specialized as a continuous wave radar repairman, and attended improved hawk transition training, the non-commissioned officers academy and the first sergeant administration course.O'Gurek is the recipient of numerous citations, decorations, medals and ribbons.He and his wife, Katie, live in Madison, Ala., as do their three daughters and their two grandchildren. He celebrated his 70th birthday on Oct. 27.Because of the adverse effect seasonal winds have on the flags, the program will end for the year after the week of Nov. 4. Town residents are invited to contact Lions Club members to have a family member or friend scheduled to be honored or memorialized with the startup of the program in early 2014 by calling Joseph O'Gurek Jr., 570-645-5171.The only stipulations are that the person being recognized is a current or former town resident and must have served in the Armed Services.
