March of the ....washing machines?

Where can you see marching hula girls, real-life Little Red Riding Hoods with a big Big Bad Wolf, and dozens of children doing handsprings and cartwheels as they pass?

That would be at the annual Lehighton Area Halloween Parade.The 43rd annual parade, consisting of five divisions, was held in Lehighton Saturday.Despite a drizzle that lasted over half an hour, the parade was well attended by spectators who lined the route at some points several people deep.Parade officials were pleased with the turnout of participants and spectators."I think it went very well," said Parade Committee Chairman Julie Harris.Hilbert Haas, a founder of the parade and a member of the parade committee, agreed."There was a large crowd and everything went smooth," Haas said. He pointed out there were five bands in the five-division march.Haas founded the parade 43 years ago with the late Ervin L. Hawk.It was recalled by Haas that he and Hawk were talking and Haas suggested they revitalize the parade, which had been dormant for a number of years.Hawk then served as organizer and chairman for many years.Saturday's parade paid tribute to the 4-H clubs of Carbon County.One group of 4-H members pulled a cage with three pigs in it.The grand marshal was Robert Miller of Franklin Township, the longest-serving 4-H volunteer in Carbon County. Seated next to him in a convertible was his wife, Ferne.Judges for the parade were Martha Cox, Gloria Bowman, and Clark Ritter.At the conclusion of the parade, 1,000 hot dogs were distributed to participants by the parade committee.First place winners in the parade were:• Best of Show - Lehighton Area High School Marching Band.• Pre-Schools - 1. St. Matthew Pre-School (We've Got Character); 2. Jack and Jill Pre-School (Harvest Hoedown).• Dance Groups - 1. Dance With Kim (Live for the Applause).• Cars - Jukebox Cruisers.• Floats - Yenser's Tree Farm (Trees for Troops).• Service Organizations - Lehighton Rotary Club and Lehighton Pool Pals (Lehighton Handmade Holiday Craft Show featuring the Real Mr. and Mrs. Santa A. Claus).• Best Appearance - Jim Thorpe National Bank (Paradise).• Scout Troops - Cub Pack 82 (Cub Scouts: It's Good, Clean Fun).
