School play

The play, One in a Million, will take place at Pleasant Valley Middle School at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, as a dress rehearsal to which Senior Citizens are invited, for free. grasee@ptd.net.Lions ClubWestern Pocono Lions Club members continued the club's tradition of taking seniors out for a ride in the countryside to see the fall foliage this past Saturday. Those seniors came from four personal care homes: Brookmont, Mrs. Bushes, Getz's and Westlian.Drivers included Charles Rush, Tom Kresge, Sharon Sweeney, Jeff and Linda Hinton, Donald Gower, Fred Klein, Dave Rowan, Barbara Konawalek and Rick Zimmerman.The event was coordinated by Christopher J. Sweeney Sr., past state Lions council chairman, who has been organizing it for 35 years. In that time about 1,500 guests have been taken to see the fall leaves.The monthly dinner meeting for the Lions will take place at The Old Mill Pizza on Route 209 in Sciota, Wednesday. Gathering time is at 6:30 p.m.; the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Lindsay Vaughn, dietitian from ShopRite, who will talk about cooking for one or two.Apprise appointmentsThe Monroe County Area Agency on Aging APPRISE program will have free plan comparisons for Medicare beneficiaries. The days for comparisons will be Mondays and Tuesdays, starting Tuesday, Oct. 15 and ending Tuesday, Dec. 3. Each one should bring a sandwich. Beverages are provided.Monroe SeniorsThis county-supported group also meets at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville. They begin gathering at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays for a social time, some special programs and for lunch. She can be reached at 570-992-6988.Garden of GivingOn Saturday there will be both garlic planting and tours of the farm at the Garden of Giving in McMichaels, Saylorsburg. Everyone is welcome to visit the garden and/or help plant garlic to be harvested next year.Lioness partyWestern Pocono Lioness will meet Oct. 22, at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert. Social hour is at 6 p.m. and the business meeting starts at 7 p.m. This is the club's Halloween Party so members are asked to dress in costume and to bring refreshments, especially chocolate, and appropriate games to play.PVEN needsThe report is that shelves at the PVEN Community Service Center are relatively empty. Everything is needed, but especially the basic necessities: soup, peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables and tuna fish.
