Lansford borough council on Wednesday discussed its disappointment with recent work on the town's playgrounds.

President Rosemary Cannon, Councilman Tommy Vadyak, and other council members agreed the company hired to refinish the playgrounds did a bad job."I would like to address the job that was done up there at the students' playgrounds. Also, if you look at the job that Strohl Seal Coating did at Rite Aid, that job should not be paid for. Furthermore, I know that I asked to see their insurance and I have yet to see their insurance," Vadyak said.According to Vadyak, Strohl Seal Coating had started a sealing job at 6 p.m. when the dew had started to set. Councilman Lenny Kovach said that action caused sealant fumes to infiltrate five nearby houses.Vadyak and Kovach agreed that Strohl Seal Coating had done a poor job. Kovach disagreed regarding payment. He said that since the company had finished the job, they had to be paid.Cannon said the company had already been given the down payment to start the job, although council had decided previously to consider withholding further payment and to have the work finished by someone else. However, nobody told Strohl to stop working, so the job had already been finished.Cannon took responsibility on behalf of council."I believe part of the burden rests on us. The man came to the meeting and had all the paper work in front of us. We approved his plan without asking for the correct information. We should have asked for his insurance and everything, so I agree, but part of the burden for his poor job is on us," she said.Kovach voiced his opinion that hasty decisions would not have been made had he been present."I appreciate your expertise, Lenny, but it is after the fact, and all we can do now is learn from our mistakes," Cannon said.Council made no decisions on the matter.Council voted to send a plan to build a handicap access ramp on borough hall to the Lansford-Coaldale Joint Water Authority engineer for approval. The water authority's approval is needed because borough hall and the water authority building adjoin.Also, council approved a motion to install a sign for the borough office for a total cost of $113. Cannon said she hopes the sign will ensure that people won't have difficulty finding the building. Council also discussed a sign for the tax collector's office, which shares the building, at 1 E. Ridge St.Kovach said the borough is in desperate need of a dump truck. Council discussed buying a truck, but made no decisions.Council also passed a motion to put a roof project for seek bids for roofs for the public swimming pool outbuildings, and to begin the work in spring.Council also agreed to have its solicitor, Michael Greek, research the deed for a property on West Water Street for the future construction of a pole building. The motion included a note to seek bids for the construction once information has been confirmed.
