Tempers flared more than once at last night's Bowmanstown Borough Council meeting, where topics ranged from such diverse subjects as how to ensure borough zoning laws are being upheld to why only one of two purportedly nominated fire police will be confirmed and sworn in by the mayor.

Councilwoman Kara Scott was first to ask tough questions; however, she began by dealing with the milder subject of leaf collection.Scott noted that the council had promised borough residents that there would be at least two days of leaf collection pickup provided this fall and that an agreement to do so should be voted upon. The council unanimously approved the motion.The subject of cleanup in general then led Scott to ask about other types of borough cleanup and "why borough ordinances are not being enforced." She also asked where one should go beyond the council in order to get them enforced."There's no point to having ordinances if we do nothing with these ordinances," Scott said. "Something has to be done…because it's infuriating. It's infuriating to the residents of this community. It's infuriating to me. And it should be infuriating to all of you as well."Scott then noted that some of the cleanup should start with the borough's public areas themselves, such as weeds in the park and Atlantis trees on the fences around borough hall.She then went on to decry the Prince property along Bank Street, saying that "their property is a disaster; it must break a zillion of our ordinances", including, she questioned, possibly a multi-use zoning ordinance.Solicitor James Preston said that the borough's zoning officer is "the lawful agent for issuing citations and notices of violations…so that's the route that has to be taken."Just before the meeting closed to the public for executive session, Mayor Keith Billig reported that Diane Heiny has been nominated by the volunteer fire company for the Special Fire Police and that he, as mayor, would need to confirm her and swear her in.With that, audience member and former Bowmanstown mayoral candidate Barry Pointon, called out, "I was also nominated as well."Billig said he did not have that information in the minutes."And I told you before," added Billig, "I'm not going to confirm you, and I'm not going to swear you in until your situation…""Well then you're breaking the law," interrupted Pointon. "I'm innocent until proven guilty in this country, and you're breaking the law.""Well then sue me," Billig replied.Lastly, the council also announced that Bowmanstown's Trick or Treat night will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 6-8 p.m.In addition, they noted that Sunnyrest Resort will be sponsoring a hayride on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 7-11 p.m. and will be traveling along Fireline Road to the Freak N Funhouse and back.
