The Tamaqua Board of Health held its September meeting with Earl Boettger, Randy Gormley, Shirley Becker, Health Officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and Code Enforcement Officer Mitch Geist in attendance.Geist reported making 10 spot check inspections, including at Happy Endings, Tamaqua Diner, Luigi's Pizza, Broad Street Deli, Burger King, Sisters Cantina, Turkey Hill, Hang Loose, Grande Pizza and Hunan House. The total number of licenses issued so far this year is 45. He also received and adjusted 13 complaints: one leaking sewer; one building condemned as unfit for human habitation; and 11 trash complaints. There were no cases of reportable diseases for the month.The board reminded residents that dog owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.Violations should be reported to Tamaqua Borough Hall, (570) 668-3444. Please provide the place, date, time and name of the dog's owner. Citations will then be filed through the office of District Magistrate Stephen Bayer.Movie nightThe League of Literaries will host a free movie night, Sept. 28, at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St. The feature film will be "Julie and Julia," which will begin at 7:30 p.m.For more information, call (570) 668-1192 or visit

This year's event will feature more than a dozen participating local high school marching bands, including: Annville-Cleona, Bangor, Emmaus, Exeter Township, Mahanoy Area, Minersville, Nativity BVM, Panther Valley, Pottsville Area, Shenandoah Valley, Southern Lehigh, Tri Valley and Wilson.Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the competition will begin at 6:30 p.m.Calvary EvangelicalThe Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.An hour of prayer and praise is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. The contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA.
