Large water main break creates boil advisory in part of Tamaqua

Residents in the east end of Tamaqua are under a water boil advisory after a large water main break yesterday afternoon sent water, dirt and rocks shooting into the parking lot of the Tamaqua Plaza, formerly Jamesway Plaza.

Since the burst, borough crews have been working non-stop to replace the broken section of pipe.Rob Jones, Tamaqua's Public Works director, estimated the affected pipes were built when the plaza was built, in the early '70s.The incident and repairs have caused a discoloration of water for many Tamaqua residents, not just the east end of town.An automated message from the Tamaqua Water Authority to Tamaqua residents stated that the water is safe to drink. The message added that residents east of Columbia Street are encouraged to boil their water until further notice.
