Woman charged after pet dies in parked vehicle

Mahoning Township police have charged a Jim Thorpe woman with cruelty to animals after her dog died while confined inside her car.

On Aug. 9 at 4:16 p.m., township police were dispatched to the Carbon Plaza Mall parking lot for a report of a deceased dog inside a car.When officers arrived, they found a dog deceased on the back seat floor of a Ford Freestyle. There was a large amount of saliva from the dog around the interior of the vehicle.Police report that Kelly Brinker, 34, had left her five-year-old greyhound locked inside the vehicle with insufficient ventilation while inside the mall at Holiday Hair with her two children.During an interview she provided a statement admitting she was inside the mall for an hour and 45 minutes. At the time the outdoor temperature was between 75-82 degrees.A necropsy was performed, showing the dog died of heat stroke. At the necropsy, which was performed five hours later, the dog's body temperature was 104 degrees.
