Ukrainian Festival this weekend in Lehighton

The 22nd Annual Ukrainian Festival begins today, Saturday, Aug. 17 and runs also on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Ukrainian Homestead, located at 1230 Beaver Run Dr., Lehighton.

The Festival begins today at noon. Stage shows will be at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Accordionist Walt Syzonenko will provide music for the evening's zabva (dance) which begins at 8 p.m.On Sunday, there will be a Divine Liturgy at St. Andrew's Chapel at 11 a.m. Stage show performances are at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.The stage show entertainment will be provided by Barbarocin from New York City, Kazka Ukrainian Folk Ensemble from Schuylkill County, the Dobriansky Brothers of New York City and Inessa Tymochko-Dekajlo, violinist.Besides entertainment, there will be a chance to sample many traditional Ukrainian foods and enjoy various folk art and exhibitions. There will be children's games, swimming at the Homestead pool and gift and craft vendors.You can enjoy the telling of Ukranian folk tales by the Kazky Children's Puppets.The Avramenko History of Ukranian Dance in the U.S. and Canada, traces the history of Ukrainian folk dance by documenting the work of the renowned folk dance choregrapher and researcher Vasily Avramenko.Other cultural displays will include pysanky (egg decorating) and gerdany (beadworking.)Admission is $5 a person for one day or $7 a person for both days.
