Fatality at the falls

A New York woman died on Saturday afternoon after she fell about 45 feet at Lehigh Gorge State Park in Carbon County.

Perla Cabral, 31, was identified as the victim by county coroner Bruce Nalesnik. He said an autopsy is scheduled for this morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.The woman was hiking in the area with a companion. Rescuers spent three hours trying to retrieve the woman who fell near the top of a waterfall. Nalesnik said the woman was responsive when first reached by emergency personnel but died on the way down the mountain.The area is a favorite site for hikers and hill climbers but a very dangerous one.Cabral, a concert promoter and musician in New York, was reportedly hiking with someone from the Emmaus area.Volunteers from several surrounding fire departments assisted in the rescue. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.
