Mahoning fire company benefits from old cruiser

Even after consigned to being scrapped, a police cruiser provided a service one more time.

A Mahoning Township police car recently had reached the end of its usable service and was to be sent to the scrap yard.Fire Chief Mark Ebbert approached acting Police Chief Audie Mertz and asked if the police car could be used for training before its disposal.Jay Michalik, assistant fire chief, remarked, "Without hesitation Police Chief Mertz made arrangements with the township supervisors and the township road crew to make the car available to the volunteer firefighters to keep their rescue skills sharp."Michalik explained, "Training on a car like this provided us opportunity to work with things such as a roll bar not commonly dealt with on a daily basis. It's another terrific example of all the good that can come out of our township leaders understanding the true value of the volunteers of this community. ""We are lucky in Mahoning Township to have such cooperation between Police Chief Mertz, the township supervisors, and the Mahoning Valley Vol. Fire Co. No. 1. We can't thank them enough," the assistant chief added.The training enabled to the firefighters to practice such techniques as vehicle extrication, utilizing rescue tools, and safety at accident scenes.
