The Carbon County Fair is calling all bakers for this year's special baking contests. The fair kicks off Aug. 5.

The 2013 PA Preferred Chocolate Cake Baking (adult) contest and 2013 PA Preferred Chocolate Cookie, Brownie, or Bar Baking (for youth ages 8-18) contest are cosponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's PA Preferred program and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs.Contestants are encouraged to use as many Pennsylvania-produced ingredients as possible in their chocolate baking recipes. www.PAPreferred.com.Carbon County Fair's contest is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection of the final PA Preferred Chocolate Baking blue ribbon winners each January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. First place winners will be awarded a prize of $25 for the winning chocolate cake recipe and $30 for the winning chocolate cookie, brownie or bar recipe.Angel food cakeThis is the 10th year for the annual Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest.There are two main types of cakes: butter and foam (egg-leavened). Angel food is the classic example of a foam cake. The cake is 100 percent fat free and, because of the eggs, is a good source of the highest quality protein, as well a source of choline, which is essential to memory and brain development.When entering your cake, it must be made from scratch and using eggs produced in Pennsylvania. First place winner will receive $25. Carbon County Fair's contest is a preliminary competition that qualifies the first place winner to enter at PA Farm Show.Apple pieTo enter a pie in the 2013 Blue Ribbon Apple Pie baking contest, it must include at least 60 percent apples in the filling. It does not need to be a "traditional" two crusted apple pie and it can have a variety of fillings.The first place winner at the fair will receive $25 and qualify to participate at the PA Farm Show.Cake and cookiesThere is an Applesauce Cake category for adults and a Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Cookies category for youth.Entries must follow the designated recipe that is listed in the "Premium Guide" or online.
