The Lehighton Band held its second in a series of "Concerts Under the Stars" in the Lehighton Park Amphitheater, Thursday night. The conditions were ideal. Humidity was low, the skies were clear, and lightning bugs seemed to be fluttering to the beat of the music.

From the opening "Emblem of Unity March" to the stirring finale of Civil War tunes, the band kept audience of about 150 people entertained with a variety of music including pop, country, Broadway, a French horn duet, and classical.The 100 minute concert will be repeated tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Weatherly.The Lehighton Band will also be putting on a free performance in the Weissport Park at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20.The band is under the leadership of veteran director Paul Smith.Some of the selections included "The Eighties," a medley of songs from the 1980s including "Material Girl," "What A Feeling," and "Phantom of the Opera." There also was a Civil War medley that featured "Tenting Tonight," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic.""Tennessee Salute" featured a medley of Volunteer State songs including "Your Cheating Heart," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," and "Tennessee Waltz."Long-time member Earl Knappenberger played his first ever solo with the band. He did a baritone horn solo entitled "Some Enchanted Evening" by Rodgers and Hammerstein.Also doing a solo piece were Laurel Seamiller, a recently Palmerton High School graduate, and Jo deForest, a recent graduate of Lehighton Area High School. Playing French horns, they played the selection "The Mermaids."The finale in the summer concert series will be held on Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. in the Lehighton Park Amphitheater.
