A close-up view of nature

These Brood II Magicicada "cicadas", commonly referred to as "locusts", live 17 years underground and then emerge in large numbers to produce this well equipped insect which will live only for a few weeks above ground to reproduce and restart the life cycle all over again. En-masse, they produce a mating song described by some as the sound of a screeching fan belt.
