Two Luzerne County judges have ordered Carbon and Schuylkill counties to conduct a new Primary Election for the Hazleton Area School Board.

In an order issued Tuesday, the judges said the two counties must conduct the new primary vote within 30 days of the order, tabulate and certify the vote, and forward the results to Luzerne County officials, who will add the vote totals to that county's results to determine the nominations for the Democratic and Republican races for school board.The judges ruled that since there is no question concerning the vote in Luzerne, those results stand.The new election will be held in the areas of Carbon and Schuylkill that vote for members of the Hazleton school board.In Carbon the areas are Beaver Meadows and Banks Township. In Schuylkill the areas include McAdoo, and the townships of Kline, East Union and North Union.The order is the result of petitions filed in the two counties by 25 registered voters in the school district challenging the results.The petitions are the result of the fact that candidate Seven Hahn, an incumbent, withdrew from the race and properly notified the Luzerne County election bureau of his withdraw. Luzerne County did not list his name on its ballot.However, Luzerne County Election Bureau director Marisa Crispell did not notify Carbon and Schuylkill of the withdrawal. Those two counties listed Hahn on their ballots. He received a total of 500 votes in those counties.Crispell admitted her error in not notifying the other two counties.The 500 vote total could change the results for the nominations in both parties for the fourth spot on the ballot.The judges also ruled that Luzerne County must pay the legal costs of the petitioners and also pay for the costs of the new elections in Carbon and Schuylkill.The order does not state if the new elections should be held the same day in each county. It lets the election board in Carbon and Schuylkill decide when the new election will be held, but does state it must be within 30 days of yesterday's order.
