Car goes down 216 foot embankment off I-81

A North Carolina woman miraculously survived a violent one-car accident at about 12:30 p.m. yesterday on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County.

According to state police, Marie Enweiler, 31, of Randelman, N.C., was driving north on Interstate 81. After she lost control of her car, the vehicle hit a traffic attenuator, then went 216 feet down a grassy embankment, hit a guide rail along the westbound lane of Morea Road, went airborne end-over-end 97 feet and came to rest after striking an eastbound guide rail.The incident occurred near the borders of Mahanoy and Ryan Township.Enweiler, who was injured, was extricated by firefighters from McAdoo, Ryan Township and Mahanoy City and was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center in Pottsville.She told responding firefighters that a tractor trailer had cut her off on the interstate.McAdoo Ambulance and others also responded. Mahanoy City fire police detoured traffic around the area for the duration.
