At the June 3 meeting of the Polk Township Historical Society, President Norman Burger was authorized to get the materials needed to restore the bake oven that was donated by the Jonas Hotel.

It was moved to the West End Fairgrounds, but needs extensive renovating. Harry Koehler has offered to do the work.A stone cap to support the chimney will be purchased from Williams Sons. Burger is going to investigate the possibility of getting used brick. Lime mortar is required. There was a question of whether they should buy doors or use a wooden plug. The doors were approved. A double door will put less weight on the hinges and not extend as far from the oven.The question of compromising the historic value by placing doors when it is not known if they were originally there was raised.Roy Christman said just moving the oven compromised it. He suggested doing what is most suitable for the planned use.A flue will have to be added. If it had one, it would be grandfathered that way and could continue. Christman said every step of the restoration should be photographed. Every change becomes part of its history.A woman who works at Quiet Valley offered to come help bake bread in the oven. Quiet Valley has its own bake oven.Burger said a limited small games of chance license will be needed for the September event at the fairgrounds.Steve Firtko said there were some issues with the lodge in Kresgeville, which is the society's museum. Among other things, two windowsills are rotting out.DVDs of the anniversary book were given to people for editing. Burger had said the book would be between 200 and 250 pages. Presently there are 246 but that leaves out some pictures that he thinks would be valuable to include. Some stories are clearly missing parts of the information but that can't be helped, said Burger.Ernie Foucault asked if the society wants to make a donation to the anniversary committee. It will donate $100, which is enough to be included on the list of donations in the book.The next meeting will be held the first Wednesday in September.
