Electronic recycling

Due to new regulations, Pennsylvania residents can no longer place electronic devices out for curbside pick up on trash day. Mauch Chunk Trust Bank and the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce will jointly sponsor a free electronic recycling event on July 20 at the Mauch Chunk Trust office on SR309 in Hometown.Items to be collected and recycled include televisions, telephones, cell phones, keyboards, cables, cords, CRT monitors, copiers, printers, fax machines, stereos, speakers, DVD players, VCRs, video game systems, LCD monitors, hard drives and computers.Hours are yet to be determined.Rush-Ryan seniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met June 11 at the Ryan Township Fire Company. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business session.Reports were offered by treasurer Shirley Becker and secretary Gloria Gerhard. Sylvia Garcia, Judy Mogish and Rose Valee were all welcomed back. Birthday wishes were extended to Leona Machay, Faye Sweeney and Bill Morrison.Joyce and Ted Krell were congratulated on the celebration of their 54th wedding anniversary.The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Honor rollMatthew Kistler, a fifth grade student at West Penn Elementary School, was missing from the list of students who earned honor roll status. Matthew earned straight As for the final marking period of the 2012-2013 school year.Cressona bandThe Cressona Band will perform at the Tamaqua ABC Hi Rise, 222 E. Broad St., Tamaqua at 7 p.m. on June 19. The concert is sponsored by Dr. Richard Chwastiak and Shafer's Pharmacy.The band's performances include show tunes, marches, overtures and songs of yesteryear. The public is welcome to attend.Fitness programDiakon Community Services is offering a free exerette fitness program at the Tamaqua Salvation Army. Participants will learn how to enhance their posture, improve their balance and increase their flexibility.The sessions are offered twice weekly, from 9:30-11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursday.For more information, contact Dina at (570) 668-0410.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. The later service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Zion's West Penn Park, followed by the church picnic.Activities for next week will include: weeklong, Good News Day Camp from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesday, Playground Pals at 11:30 a.m. at the South Ward Playground; Wednesday, Waterside Whistle Stop at 2:30 p.m. at the Bungalow; Thursday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, musician practice at 8 a.m., praise rehearsal at 9:30 a.m.
