Safe Sitter course available at BMHS

Blue Mountain Health System will offer a Safe Sitter course for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. The class will be held on Friday, June 28. The class will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the BMHS Gnaden Huetten Campus 2nd Floor Education Center at 211 N. 12th St. in Lehighton.

Safe Sitter is a medically accurate program that teaches young adolescents how to handle emergencies when caring for younger children. The cost is $35 and includes all resource materials and supplies, including a Safe Sitter messenger bag, Band-aids, Flashlight, Important Numbers Post-its, completion card, snacks and lunch.The goal of Safe Sitter is to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children being cared for by babysitters. Thousands of young adolescents across the country have been trained by Safe Sitter to handle life threatening emergencies.All information is taught by trained Safe Sitter instructors Mary Lou McGeehan, Denise Kennedy and Candy Madera. During the course, students will receive hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques so they are prepared to act in a crisis.Participants will also receive helpful tips that will make them more confident caregivers, plus information on child development and age-appropriate activities. They will learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door; when and how to call for help; and the business aspect of babysitting.To successfully complete the Safe Sitter program, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test to show that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.Space is limited and registration and prepayment are required.
