A road project will cost Lower Towamensing Township over $150,000 to complete.

On Tuesday, the township's board of supervisors unanimously agreed to award a contract in the amount of $153,943 to Hanson Aggregates, of Stroudsburg, to do base repair and paving on Hemlock Street.That bid was $44,955 less than the next lowest proposal of $198,898 turned in by Lehigh Asphalt, Tamaqua.Other companies that bid were Hazleton Site Contractors, Hazleton ($202,203); Bracalante Construction, Inc., Northampton ($227,573); and Eastern Industries, Inc. of Center Valley.Also on Tuesday, Roy Christman, a resident of the township, asked supervisors if the township would consider hosting a conference to discuss recycling issues in Carbon County.Christman told supervisors he believes the township's municipal building would be a viable venue to host the conference, whereby all jurisdictions in the county would be invited to send a representative to discuss problems encountered and their solutions.In addition, Christman said the representatives could also learn about grant programs available, as well as opportunities to generate income from the recycled material.Supervisors appeared to be receptive to the idea, though no meeting date has yet to be established.In an unrelated matter, supervisors Chairman Brent Green said residents who live on Gap Road have expressed concerns about traffic and speeding.Green said that while the township could put a speed limit sign up, it would be a matter of enforcement. He noted that there are several homes along Gap Road.No decision was made by supervisors on the matter.In other business, the board:• Agreed to purchase backhoe forks from Bradco in the amount of $629.• Agreed to purchase a pack blower from Kerns Outdoor Power Equipment, Slatington, in the amount of $425.• Granted waivers to the Brian Stroup plan, with several conditions attached.• Granted an extension to the Eckhart subdivision plan until the end of the year.• Appointed resident Robert Kester to the township's Recreation Committee.• Granted permission for the Aquashicola Fire Company to participate in the 150th Anniversary of the Weatherly Parade on Saturday, Oct. 5.
