The Tamaqua Business and Professional Women's Club held an installation of officers during its May meeting. Marcia Leonard, assistant District 9 of Pennsylvania, served as installation officer.Accepting the duties for 2013-2014 were: Nancy Stevens, president; Judy Kellner, vice-president; Cindy Sabol, recording secretary; Mary Bridygham, corresponding secretary; Jean Towle, treasurer; and Phyllis Paisley, parliamentarian.Maureen Donovan offered table grace and new members were inducted by Jean Towle. The new members include Leona Rega, Larissa Verta and Lacey Gonzalez.Following a program of patriotic selections by Phyllis Paisley, the membership discussed the upcoming State Convention in Erie and the annual membership picnic.The Tamaqua BPW is a non-profit organization that strives to achieve equity for all women through advocacy, education and information. It is part of the Pennsylvania Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. During the past year the BPW has participated in many community events, including daffodil sales for American Cancer Society, Memorial Day parade, sponsorship of scholarship for a local girl, Stuff the Bus for local school students, and support of Women Veterans.An invitation for membership in the Tamaqua BPW is open to all women, young women and area college students. The next meeting will be held in September.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met June 6 at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown, with 72 members and two guests in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided humorous readings.Jacqui Patrick provided the invocation "Safe Place." Reports were offered by the secretary and treasurer. Rosetta Folk was added to the sick list. On June 18, farmers market vouchers will be distributed to those who meet the eligibility guidelines. Other upcoming events include: June 27, at 11:30 a.m., a representative from the Attorney General's office will provide information on identity theft; July 11, Chinese auction.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Summer concertLast week's Summer Concert at the Tamaqua Train Station had to be postponed due to weather. It has been rescheduled for this Thursday, June 13, at 6 p.m. and will feature Lizard Creek.The concerts are free and open to the public.Tax officeThe office of Tamaqua tax collector Alan Kerr will be closed all next week, beginning June 17. The office will re-open on June 24.Mail payments will still be accepted during this time.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Rev. Roberts will also officiate at a contemporary service at 10:30 a.m., at the Tamaqua YMCA. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the church.Also on Sunday, the monthly service at the Hometown Nursing Center will be held at 2:30 p.m.Activities for next week will include: weeklong, TYM will be attending the Big Creek Mission; Tuesday, Playground Pals at 11:30 a.m., at the South Ward Playground; Wednesday, Waterside Whistle Stop at 2:30 p.m., at the Bungalow; Saturday, musician practice at 8 a.m., praise rehearsal at 9:30 a.m.
