BMHS, Lions co-sponsor health fair in Palmerton

It was both educational, and interactive, in its approach.

Indeed, outreach was the name of the game for those who attended a community health fair on basic preventive medicine and medical screening services at Palmerton Hospital. The community health fair, held on the main floor and cafeteria of the hospital's campus on Saturday, was co-sponsored by Blue Mountain Health System and the Palmerton Lions Club.Visitors who came out were able to get a wide range of free screenings such as fasting cholesterol and blood glucose, pulmonary function, blood pressure, depression and anxiety, and body fat measurements.Kristin Kline, of Palmerton, was among those to take advantage of the free offerings at her disposal."I thought they were very friendly, very informative," Kline said. "I think it's great because it's for free, and because a lot of people don't have insurance."George Unangst, president of the Palmerton Lions Club, said the purpose of the event was to "serve the public," which he added goes hand in hand with the organization's motto of "We Serve.""The turnout was not what we expected," Unangst said. "This was to provide a service to the community."A limited number of EKGs were offered by appointment only. In addition, representatives from BMHS, and various agencies and organizations from Carbon County, were on hand to provide information and education on a variety of health and wellness topics and services.Gift certificates, donated by Bob's Flower Shop, Simply Something Café, Shea's Hardware, Palmerton Auto Parts and Spillane's, were awarded throughout the morning.A light lunch and refreshments were served courtesy of the Palmerton Lions Club.
