Following an automatic fire alarm just before 7 p.m. yesterday, police and firefighters responded to thick smoke on the third floor of the Mahanoy City High Rise. Some residents chose to evacuate, while firefighters from Mahanoy City and surrounding municipalities responded. Further investigation showed that burnt food was the cause. Firefighters on scene stated that the high rise, 10 W. Centre St. (SR54), is equipped with automatic sprinklers in all the hallways. No serious injuries were reported.
