Teen cited for having BB gun

A tip from a concerned citizen led Tamaqua police to cite a 13-year-old male on May 21.

The caller reported a group of males was walking in the area of the Turkey Hill Minute Mart on East Broad Street at 4:51 p.m. with one of them in possession of a gun. When Patrolman Anthony Stanell arrived he observed a group of five young males walking in the area. As he parked his patrol car, an off duty state trooper also responded to the gun call. When the group saw police, one of the males fled on foot, with the trooper in pursuit. Stanell questioned the other males and a 13-year-old admitted that he had been carrying an air soft pistol, which he tossed to the side when he saw police.Stanell advised him it was illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to possess a BB or air type gun unless they were accompanied by a parent and issued him a citation. The pistol was recovered. The boy who fled was captured by the trooper and said he ran because he had been involved in a fight earlier in the day and thought police were looking for him in connection with that incident.
