Henry M. Desrosiers, Director of Veterans Affairs in Carbon County, served as the main speaker during Memorial Day services held at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Cemetery in the Bloomingdale section of White Bear, Summit Hill, on Sunday.

He told the audience, "Memorial Day is a day of conflicting emotions."He stressed that while it is a day for picnicking and a holiday from work, it is also "a solumn day of remembrance.""We owe a great debt to those who gave their lives so we can live free," he said.Desrosiers quoted scripture, stating, "There is no greater love than a man laying down his life for his friends." He said this is typical of a soldier.He also quoted G. K. Chesterton, the English writer, who stated, "The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."The speaker urged the crowd that remembering our fallen in our duty. He said, "They gave all their tomorrows so we could have our todays."Kiley Boswell sang the National Anthem.William K. O'Donnell, commander of Summit Hill American Legion Post 316, presented opening and closing remarks.Amber Guzman, a student at Panther Valley High School, read the Gettysburg Address.Logan's Orders were presented by PVHS student Richard Smith.Another Panther student, Megan Thomas, read "Flander's Field."Gregory Miller, chaplain of American Legion Post 316, read the roll call of deceased veterans.The invocation and benediction were offered by Father Jim Burdess, pastor of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Summit Hill.
