May 25, 1963 Tamaqua's George Barron finishes in sixth place in the shot put at the PIAA state track and field championships at Penn State University. Barron, who was the runner-up at the District 11 meet, registers a toss of 52-1. The event is won (by West Mifflin's Jim Flanigan) with a record-setting distance of 58-3. Barron, who was accompanied to the meet by coach Harry Fetterman, betters his district mark of 51-10 .
