The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization held its last meeting of the 2012-2013 school year on May 14. Members finalized a few items to close business for the year and discussed several ideas for 2013-2014.Officers offered thanks to the many parents, teachers and school staff for the assistance offered throughout the school year, noting that many of the children's activities would not have been possible without the help.Officers for 2013-2014 will be: Missy Hess, president; Corinne Miller, vice-president; Lori Fannock and Diane Jones, treasurers; Jennifer Mateyak, secretary; Sue Coombe, public relations.The group will resume monthly meetings in August.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met May 15 at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown, with 75 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session.Jacquie Patrick provided the invocation, titled "Bruno's Buffet." Secretary Carol Yanalavage offered thanks to Norma Lee Burke, who filled in for her at the May 9 meeting.Topics that were discussed include: the June 12 trip to Knoebel's Grove; a Memorial Day service at the May 23 meeting; possible outings to Olive Garden and Vanity Fair; a picnic lunch to be provided for the next meeting.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship services Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. A Memorial Day service will be held at 10:30 a.m.Activities for next week include: Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m., preschool moving up ceremony at 6:30 p.m., senior choir rehearsal at 7:30 p.m.Fitness programDiakon Community Services is offering a free exerette fitness program at the Tamaqua Salvation Army. Participants will learn how to enhance their posture, improve their balance and increase their flexibility.The sessions are offered twice weekly, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., on Tuesdays and Thursday.For more information, contact Dina at (570) 668-0410.First MethodistThe Rev. James Cavallero will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in First United Methodist Church. A children's message will be presented by Marge Kropp. Children's Sunday school will meet following the children's message.Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, quilters meet at 9:30 a.m.; Wednesday, chancel choir rehearses at 7 p.m.
